How to Become a Christian . . .
A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ who has received the gift of salvation. To become a Christian, a person must realize that he or she is “lost” — totally estranged from God. Because of sin, we are separated from a personal relationship with God. People tend to divide themselves into two groups, good and bad people. But God says that every person that has ever lived is a sinner and that any sin separates us from Him.
“For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
A person alone cannot reconcile the lost relationship between himself or herself and God. To provide a remedy, God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into this World.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believed on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
Although separated from God by sin, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross bridges that gap.
“But demonstrated His love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
All that God asks is that a man or woman repent of his or her sins, turn from them and accept the sacrifice Christ made on the cross.
“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” — Romans 10:9-10
God promises in the Bible that anyone who accepts Christ as Savior will be saved.
“For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” — Romans 10:13
Are you ready to accept the gift of eternal life that Jesus is offering you right now? If it is your sincere desire to ask Jesus to come into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior, then you need to talk to God from your heart in words as found in the “Sinners Prayer.”
“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and do not deserve eternal life. But I believe You died on the cross in order that I might be forgiven of my sins. I ask You to come into my life to forgive me of my sins, take control of my life and save me. I am placing my trust in You and You alone for my salvation. I accept on faith Your free gift of eternal life. Thank You for saving me. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.”
What you need to do now:
Becoming a Christian is just the beginning of the Christian life. Nourishment and encouragement to grow in your new life in Christ will come through Bible reading, prayer and fellowship with other Christians in the church. Christ calls us to follow Him in obedience by uniting with a church and in baptism.
If you have trusted Christ as Lord and Savior, please let us know. We want to rejoice in what God has done in your life and help you grow spiritually. If you do not have a church home, we invite you to join in the fellowship of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, or we will help you find a church in your local area. As you live your life in Christ, you will discover true purpose and meaning. We encourage you to a talk with another Christian about your decision.
You may call the church at (334) 272-0604 or write us at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3604 Pleasant Ridge Road, Montgomery, AL 36109.
